Dr. Floyd specializes in materials failure analysis by combining his expertise in materials science, metallurgical engineering and corrosion. He has performed failure analysis of a wide variety of products including consumer electronics, dental hardware, contaminated food, pipelines and power distribution. He has experience working as a research and developer, prototyping novel materials and processing mechanisms. Additionally, Dr. Floyd has experience with power transformers and development of new transformer materials for the electrical grid.

Dr. Floyd studied at the California Institute of Technology where he received a Ph.D. in Materials Science and an M.S. in Materials Science. His research interests focused on alloy development of ferromagnetic metallic glasses for soft magnetic purposes, along with the researching novel oxide purification techniques, and optimizing the efficiency of power transformer cores. His research also involved the chemical structure of metallic glasses and how their structure affected their mechanical and magnetic properties. During his time at the California Institute of Technology, he used scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, secondary ion mass spectroscopy, x-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis and optical microscopy to carry out his research.

Dr. Floyd is an inventor on a large number of patents related to novel alloy compositions and processing mechanisms to improve the material properties of metals.
