Dr. Azin Ghaffary specializes in performance-based design and assessment of structures subjected to earthquake and wind loads using deterministic and probabilistic approaches. She has considerable experience with nonlinear building response simulation using multi-physics simulation methods. She has performed seismic performance assessments of buildings equipped with passive and semiactive seismic control devices using coupled OpenSEES/ABAQUS computational environments. She has also performed wind performance assessments of buildings using standalone OpenSEES and coupled OpenSEES/Fluent simulations.

Dr. Ghaffary has developed an iterative coupling approach for combining finite element and computational fluid dynamics programs OpenSEES and ANSYS/Fluent. She has expertise simulating the behavior of Triangular Added Damping and Stiffness (TADAS) dampers and Magnetorheological (MR) dampers, and incorporating their component responses as part of assessing the global structural response. She is also experienced with bridge girder repair methods.

In additional to her technical consulting work, Dr. Ghaffary is a member of several professional associations including American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), American Association for Wind Engineering (AAWE), and Earthquake Engineering Research Institute (EERI).
