Dr. Hamed specializes in solid mechanics, biomechanics, finite element analysis, and molecular-level simulations. She has applied her expertise to a wide range of engineering fields, including biomedical applications, composite engineering, consumer electronics, and polymer science.

While at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Dr. Hamed’s doctoral research focused on the development of multiscale analytical and computational models of human bones to understand the relationship between bone hierarchical structure and bone biomechanical properties, including stiffness and strength. Her developed models are powerful predictive tools for assessing the effect of various parameters, such as aging and diseases, on overall quality and fracture risk of bones in the human body. As a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Northwestern University, Dr. Hamed conducted atomistic simulations of protein-polymer conjugates, a new class of hybrid biomaterials with applications in drug delivery systems, and uncovered the conditions under which polymers can improve the thermal and mechanical stability of proteins. Her earlier graduate work focused on analyzing the effect of defects on the strength and thermal capacity of thin films, with the objective of developing guidelines for the design and fabrication of defect-free, high-performance thin films for sensors, NEMS, and other engineering devices.

Additionally, during her graduate studies at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Dr. Hamed was a teaching assistant for several courses, including Calculus, Solid Mechanics, and Fluid Dynamics. She further fulfilled her interest in teaching by serving as an instructor for the course “Finite Element Analysis” at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign prior to joining Exponent.
