Dr. Kent’s areas of specialty include process engineering and quality management with a focus on the manufacturing sector. He has expertise in conducting technology transfers, process validations, risk assessments, root cause analyses, and regulatory compliance audits. Dr. Kent has also led technical investigations at manufacturing facilities which have yielded definitive root causes and robust corrective and preventative actions (CAPAs).

Prior to joining Exponent, Dr. Kent worked in the semiconductor and biopharmaceutical industries. As a Senior Process Engineer with Intel Corporation, Dr. Kent managed advanced production lines wherein he employed statistical process control methodologies and provided 24/7 on-call coverage in support of stringent cost, quality, and schedule goals. Dr. Kent has also held management roles at two leading contract manufacturing organizations (CMOs): Lonza and Emergent BioSolutions. He oversaw the design and implementation of a process validation program, and has spearheaded projects involving sterility assurance, product recalls, cleanroom airflow studies, particulate matter identifications, and glass defect investigations. Additionally, Dr. Kent has supported multiple regulatory audits and has experience responding to both FDA 483 observations and a Warning Letter.

Dr. Kent has hands-on experience with a variety of material characterization techniques including spectroscopy (e.g., FT-IR, UV-Vis, EDS/EDX) and microscopy (e.g., optical, fluorescence, SEM, AFM). He also has extensive experience with semiconductor unit operations (e.g., lithography, thin film deposition, etch), aseptic fill/finish operations (e.g., manual and semi-automated filling of vials, syringes, and bags), cell culture (e.g., adherent and non-adherent mammalian cells; motile bacteria), and current good manufacturing practices (cGMPs).

Dr. Kent holds a Ph.D. in chemical and biomolecular engineering from Johns Hopkins University. His multidisciplinary research involved the design and manufacture of self-assembling, thin film microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) including tissue scaffolds, microfluidic devices, and microsurgical tools.

In addition to his scientific experience, Dr. Kent has expertise in emergency management. He is an active member of his local volunteer fire and rescue department where he serves as a shift leader, firefighter, emergency vehicle operator, and emergency medical technician (EMT).
