Dr. Laughery specializes in the behavior of reinforced concrete and masonry structures under extreme demands. He has more than six years of experience testing structural elements in the laboratory, including beams, slabs, columns, structural walls, and frames. He also has conducted shake-table tests on reinforced concrete frames and unreinforced masonry walls to investigate demands on these structures during earthquakes. In 2016 and 2017, Dr. Laughery conducted reconnaissance on dozens of reinforced concrete and masonry structures after earthquakes in Taiwan and South Korea.

Before joining Exponent, Dr. Laughery was a researcher at Nagoya Institute of Technology in Japan. There, he investigated the strength of reinforced concrete structural walls with openings, as well as the behavior of frames retrofitted using high-strength concrete panel infills.

Dr. Laughery is active in the earthquake engineering and reinforced concrete research communities. He currently serves on the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute's Younger Members Committee. He is also active in the American Concrete Institute through Committees 133 (Disaster Reconnaissance) and 123 (Research and Current Developments).
