Dr. Miller specializes in experimental and analytical investigations of mechanical phenomena and integration of intelligent robotic systems. He provides expertise to clients interested in further understanding, diagnosing, and/or optimizing their mechanical systems as well as clients looking to augment robotic systems with intelligence or process-based knowledge. He has direct experience in the geotechnical construction, oil & gas, and aerospace industries and currently serves as a member on the Robotic Industries Association drafting subcommittees on Industrial Robot Safety (15.06) and Industrial Mobile Robot Safety (15.08).
Prior to joining Exponent, Dr. Miller had industrial research and development roles with United Technologies and Schlumberger. At United Technologies, he specialized in robotic manipulation as well as in the integration of intelligent software systems with hardware platforms. He has experience with both original equipment manufacturer-specific languages as well as open-source software such as the Robot Operating System (including ROS-I). At Schlumberger, Dr. Miller focused on the mechanics of tubular structures and advanced materials confined in the downhole environment. In this role, he designed and built scaled model experiments to characterize systems and to explore improvement strategies at a greatly reduced cost and timeline to support new product development for coiled tubing, drilling, and acoustic logging tools. Prior to graduate school, Dr. Miller worked for GeoEngineers as a staff level geotechnical engineer, performing construction observation for traditional and trenchless construction projects, site investigation, and geotechnical design work.
