Dr. Mousavi specializes in geotechnical engineering, earthquake engineering, transportation geotechnics, unsaturated soil mechanics, and advanced experimental soil testing. He has a wide range of experience on evaluating liquefaction potential of sands and silty sands and mitigation techniques, earthquake-induced settlement, site-specific response analysis, slope stability assessment, geotechnical and structural design of drilled shafts, evaluation of laterally loaded piles, foundation settlement evaluation and mitigation, design and evaluation of earth-fill dams, retaining wall design and performance, and flexible and rigid pavement design and evaluation. He has experience with various technical software such as Plaxis, GeoStudio, Slide, Settle 3D, DeepSoil, Liquefypro, LPILE, MnPAVE, FAARFIELD, and MATLAB. He has also involved in a variety of geotechnical field works such as pile driving, pile static load test, compaction test, and in-situ testing including SPT, CPT, PMT, and VST.

Prior to joining Exponent, Dr. Mousavi was a post-doctoral research associate at the University of New Hampshire (UNH), where he performed research on development of a “Mechanistic Load Restriction Decision Platform for Pavement Systems Prone to Moisture Variations”, a project funded by National Road Research Alliance (NRRA). As part of this research, he developed a coupled hydro-mechanical model which involved numerical modeling of flow in unsaturated soils as well as mechanical response of pavement layers to traffic loading, performed local and global sensitivity analyses, and developed a load restriction decision toolkit app for evaluation of pavement performance under moisture variations in real time.

Dr. Mousavi completed his Ph.D. at UNH in Civil Engineering. His Ph.D. research involved examining the effectiveness of microbial induced partial saturation method for earthquake-induced liquefaction mitigation, evaluating seismic induced settlement in saturated and unsaturated soil layers, and assessing dynamic shear modulus and damping of sands and silty sands in variably saturated state. As a result of this work, he developed a new set of strain-based formulations to estimate excess pore pressure generation and seismic compression of unsaturated soils. Dr. Mousavi has taught undergrad/grad level course “Introduction to Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering” and served as teaching assistant for several courses including Foundation Design, Soil Mechanics and Laboratory, and Project Engineering at UNH.
