Mr. Narasimhan’s background is in medical engineering with a focus on micro-/nanoelectromechanical systems (MEMS/NEMS) and nanoscale optics. He has extensive knowledge in designing, microfabricating and characterizing the performance of micro/nano-scale ophthalmic biomedical implants and biomaterials through numerous optical benchtop/in vitro tests (cell adhesion, proliferation and viability assays) as well as multi-year in vivo intraocular pressure sensing and biocompatibility studies.

Mr. Narasimhan has also applied microfabrication techniques towards the development of inertial MEMS sensors and micro-/optofluidic devices. With many years of experience in cleanrooms, Mr. Narasimhan is well versed in implementing semiconductor microfabrication processes such as dry/wet etching, E-beam evaporation, photolithography, focused ion-beam milling, E-beam lithography, direct laser writing, electroplating, and sputtering. In addition, he is proficient with metrology tools such as scanning electron microscopy, Raman microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and profilometry, as well as spectroscopic methods (VIS-NIR reflectance/transmission spectroscopy, surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, and dark-field spectroscopy). In this regard, he has handled a wide range of materials such as semiconductors (silicon), dielectrics (silicon nitride, silicon dioxide, aluminum oxide and titanium dioxide), metals (gold, silver, titanium, chromium, platinum, copper, and iron), and polymers (positive/negative photoresists, polydimethylsiloxane, polymethyl methacrylate, polystyrene, and parylene).

Mr. Narasimhan also has hands-on experience with life sciences techniques such as bacterial and mammalian cell culturing, DNA/RNA hybridization assays, ELISAs, and immunofluorescence (epifluorescence and confocal) microscopy. In addition to his experimental skillset, Mr. Narasimhan is familiar with FDTD (Finite Difference Time Domain), FEM (Finite Element Modeling), and computational software such as Lumerical, SolidWorks, and MATLAB.

Prior to joining Exponent, Mr. Narasimhan completed the coursework for a Ph.D. in Medical Engineering from the California Institute of Technology (degree is awaiting conferral), an M.S. in Medical Engineering from the California Institute of Technology, an M.Eng. in Mechanical Engineering from Nanyang Technological University, and a B. Eng. in Mechanical Engineering from the National University of Singapore. His doctoral work focused on the development, manufacturing, and performance characterization of optically-driven bio-inspired devices for various biomedical applications. Specifically, Mr. Narasimhan developed intraocular pressure sensor implants for glaucoma monitoring – a platform that he took from the early design stage through multiple successful long-term in vivo demonstrations. Another area of his research focus was on plasmonic on-chip biosensors using detection principles like surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy and plasmon-enhanced fluorescence. Furthermore, Mr. Narasimhan’s internship experience at Verily Life Sciences allowed him opportunities to contribute to the development of smart ocular devices such as smart contact lenses.
