Dr. Runa’s expertise is on the failure analysis of medical devices, with a focus on the degradation of orthopedic implants. She is proficient in tribocorrosion testing, electrochemical corrosion, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), tribology (wear, fretting), surface chemical treatments, and surface characterization techniques. She has expertise in assessing the biocompatibility and cellular interaction with the surface of implants. She has experience in performing in vitro cytotoxicity assays, such as viability/proliferation (MTT/MTS), enzymatic activity (ALP), confocal and fluorescence techniques, gene expression (realā€time qPCR), as well as evaluating cellular morphology and topography.

She completed a Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering at the Department of Mechanical Engineering in University of Minho, Guimarães, Portugal. Prior to that, she also completed a Master’s degree in the same department. All of her research work was developed in collaboration with the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at Rush University Medical Center, Chicago, IL, USA, where she focused on the degradation mechanisms of hip implants in a physiological environment and their effect on bone cells. During her graduate program, she was a teaching assistant for Degradation of Biomaterials laboratory classes.
