Kirsten Stoner
Kirsten E. Stoner, Ph.D.
Senior Associate
Biomedical Engineering
Philadelphia

Dr. Stoner’s expertise focuses on using multidisciplinary approaches to evaluate the performance of orthopaedic and neurosurgical medical devices. She is proficient in finite element modeling, multidimensional magnetic resonance (MR) and computed tomography (CT) image processing, patient outcome metrics, implant retrieval analysis, cadaveric biomechanical testing, and whole bone mechanical testing. Dr. Stoner also has experience in medical device design, 3D laser scanning, 3D printing, human subject studies, and animal model development.

Dr. Stoner obtained her Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering from The University of Iowa where she assessed how current surgical techniques for cervical myelopathy affect spinal cord strains during motion, using finite element modeling and dynamic in vivo MR imaging. In addition, she collaborated with the neurosurgery department to design a new cranioplasty plate (patent pending) and develop a large animal traumatic spinal cord injury model. Prior to pursuing her doctoral studies, she worked as a research engineer in the Department of Biomechanics at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City. There she assessed the performance of mobile versus fixed bearing total knee replacements and metal-on-metal total hip replacements. Additionally, she assessed how different meniscal and ACL repair techniques alter contact mechanics of the knee using cadaveric testing. She received her Master of Engineering in Biomedical Engineering and Bachelor of Science in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering from Cornell University. There she evaluated the effects of parathyroid hormone and alendronate on the whole bone mechanics of mice with osteogenisis imperfecta.
