Dr. Yazdi has a background in fluid mechanics, heat transfer and thermodynamics in both disciplines of chemical and mechanical engineering. She applies her interdisciplinary training to the design, development, and characterization of products in biomedical devices, biotechnology, and pharmaceutical and chemical industries. Her experience includes analyzing systems at the intersection of engineering, thermal sciences and biophysics using a broad range of tools. Dr. Yazdi has extensive expertise in combining techniques from fluid mechanics, acoustics, and optics to analyze transport phenomena in biological fluids, microscale flows, and microfluidics. In addition to her training as an engineer, she also has intensive training in physiology from the Marine Biological Laboratory. She has applied statistical mechanics modeling and quantitative biology techniques to various biomedical problems, including immunology and cell biology.

Prior to joining Exponent, Dr. Yazdi was a CASI (Career Awards at the Scientific Interface) Fellow at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). She studied morphogenesis (generation of body form) in early development of animals using optical microscopy and molecular biology. Prior to her fellowship, Dr. Yazdi was a postdoctoral research scientist at MIT working on the development of cutting edge methods for autonomous transport of magnetic colloidal particles in porous media using mathematical modeling and computational simulations of hydrodynamic interactions at fluid-structure interfaces.

Prior to her work at MIT, Dr. Yazdi was a graduate research assistant in the department of Chemical Engineering and also department of Mechanical Engineering at the Pennsylvania State University. Her research focused on using perturbation theory to study the locomotion of micro-organisms in Newtonian and non-Newtonian (viscoelastic) fluids with applications in bacterial biofilm formation and anti-fouling in implantable medical devices.

During her Masters work, Dr. Yazdi designed and fabricated various microfluidic systems for non-invasive manipulation of cells and particles by combining interdisciplinary techniques such as microscale hydrodynamics, acoustics (surface acoustic waves, acoustic streaming), and electroosmosis. She has expertise in using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and finite element analysis (FEA) platforms to simulate multiphysics processes including fluid mechanics, heat transfer, acoustics, and electronics.
