Fossil Plant Services

Fossil fuels—coal, oil, and natural gas—are a non-renewable source of energy. Formed from plants and animals that lived up to 300 million years ago, fossil fuels are found in underground deposits. The fuels are burned to release the chemical energy that is stored within them. Over 85% of our energy demands are met by the combustion of fossil fuels. The burning of fossil fuels produces carbon dioxide, of which it is estimated that natural processes can absorb only about half, so there is a net increase of atmospheric carbon dioxide per year. Carbon dioxide is one of the greenhouse gases that is alleged to contribute to global warming, causing the average surface temperature of the Earth to rise, which some climate scientists believe will cause major adverse effects.
