Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 220
Exponent has developed a large horizontal roof crush testing fixture that can be configured to accommodate a large range of vehicle sizes and components including full size heavy truck chassis and cabs. This gives us the ability to perform standardized testing, for school buses (Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) 220 School Bus Rollover Protection) and heavy trucks (Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) Recommended Practice J2422 and ECE R29 protocols for heavy truck cab roof strength). With this fixture we can also conduct any number of one-of-a-kind quasi-static load testing configurations. Load application is regulated through our computer controlled feedback system to attain the desired load or displacement. A large slotted test bed is used to adjust positioning of the fixtures and vehicles, as well as secure them in place during testing. The horizontal roof crush testing fixture has load capabilities up to 175,000 pounds of force.
