COVID-19 Support Services: Health Sciences

Exponent’s health scientists provide unparalleled interdisciplinary expertise to evaluate a full range of public health issues that face our nation and the world. Exponent is uniquely qualified to engage in the response to the current outbreak of SARS-CoV-2 and the resulting COVID-19 pandemic. Our collective expertise makes Exponent ideally suited to help address many aspects of the current pandemic related to public health in various settings, including residences, workplaces, healthcare facilities, schools, and public venues.
Our Expertise

Exponent’s multi-disciplinary team of epidemiologists, respiratory disease experts, toxicologists, risk assessors, microbiologists, biostatisticians, and physicians routinely applies public heath principles to examine and solve complex health issues in a variety of situations. Our staff has supported numerous disease outbreak investigations, including SARS-CoV-1, anthrax, Legionella, hantavirus, norovirus, Coxiella burnetii (the causative agent of Q fever), and Coccidioides (the cause of valley fever), among others. Many of our technical experts are leaders in studying the incidence, distribution, and control of diseases specific to inhaled chemical contaminants and microbial hazards and have participated in emergency response and disease surveillance activities. Our staff has been involved in advising clients on the rapidly evolving scientific and medical understanding of SARS-CoV-2 and COVID-19 through the application of specific public health recommendations. Our clients rely on us for objective health hazard assessments to allow them to make important decisions reflective of public health, employee health, and business goals.

Our Capabilities

Microbiology, Respiratory Disease, and Medical Toxicology

In Exponent’s Center for Health Sciences, our collective experience in microbiology, infectious and chemically induced respiratory disease, and medical toxicology can help clients understand disease transmission and progression. Our expertise includes the following:

  • Hazard assessment of chemical, physical, and microbial agents.
  • Microbial, chemical, and physical hazard detection and mitigation.
  • Exposure potential evaluation.
  • Health hazard evaluation.
  • Evaluations of scientific literature and governmental recommendations and guidance for inhaled particles, chemicals, and microbial agents.
  • Evaluation of infectious disease transmission and respiratory disease progression.
  • Outbreak and disease cluster investigations and medical monitoring.
  • Development and evaluation of occupational medical programs.

Epidemiology, Biostatistics, and Disease Modeling

Exponent’s multi-disciplinary staff of epidemiologists, toxicologists, microbiologists, physicians, and biostatisticians can assist clients in understanding the available COVID-19 prediction and tracking tools. Given the potential for transmission by asymptomatic persons and the relatively long incubation period for SARS-CoV-2, epidemiologic and biostatistical evaluations and disease modeling are critical tools needed to assess both transmission and medical causation issues. Our advisory work includes the following:

  • Evaluation of evolving disease models to assess appropriateness and relevance.
  • Epidemiologic evaluations to help understand potential outbreaks of SARS-CoV-2 related disease in specific industries or geographic locations.
  • Biostatistical disease modeling and its appropriateness and relevancy to site-specific conditions and populations and understanding of mechanistic biology.
  • Exposure-response assessment within specific industry segments and community settings and determination of disease causation.

Public Health / Risk Communication

Our technical advisors continue to synthesize the evolving medical and scientific literature, World Health Organization (WHO) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommendations, and other state- and county-specific health guidelines related to SARS-CoV-2. Many of Exponent’s Health Sciences staff have been trained in the principles of effective communication and routinely assist clients in translating these complex technical issues into clear and understandable messages appropriate for company or community outreach. Our technical advisors provide context for the changing medical and scientific knowledge and public health advice to assist clients in evaluating the adequacy of their programs intended to protect employees and customers from SARS-CoV-2.

Industry-Specific Health Assessments and Mitigation Recommendations

Exponent’s diverse technical experts, including health scientists, physicians, and engineers, offer a wide variety of services to evaluate the impact of underlying procedures, conditions, and behaviors that may affect disease transmission in specific environments, including residential and workplace settings, schools, and public venues. Our advisory work includes the following:

  • Disinfection and cleaning procedures.
  • Heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems and impact on viral transmission.
  • Effective and appropriate use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and distancing practices.
  • Air quality conditions and possible effects on exposure potential and risk.
  • Dispersion modeling of aerosols.
