Corporate VP and principal engineer elected to the NAE's Materials Section becomes Exponent's third active member of the academy

The National Academy of Engineering (NAE) has elected Exponent Corporate Vice President & Principal Engineer Robert Caligiuri, Ph.D., to its Materials Section.

His election "for contributions to understanding failure mechanisms in engineering materials, especially in metals at very high strain rates," makes him Exponent's third active NAE member along with Chief Executive Officer & President Catherine Ford Corrigan, Ph.D., and Senior Fellow & Principal Scientist Ronald Latanision, Ph.D.

Dr. Caligiuri holds degrees in both mechanical engineering and materials science with expertise in the standards, codes, and regulations governing the design, operation, and maintenance of engineered systems as well as when such systems fail.

His career spans over 45 years of conducting failure investigations, root-cause studies, and risk assessments for petrochemical, consumer product, and transmission pipeline clients throughout North America, Europe, and Asia.

"Dr. Caligiuri's election to the NAE's Materials Section not only recognizes his professional accomplishments and leadership during his 45-year career, with 35 years spent at Exponent," Dr. Corrigan said. "It also serves to underscore Exponent's core values and commitments to scientific excellence, objectivity, and professional development."

The NAE is one of the three national academies along with the National Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Medicine striving to advance the nation's well-being by promoting a vibrant engineering profession and by marshalling the expertise and insight of eminent engineers to advise the federal government on engineering and technology matters.

Its more than 2,000 national and international peer-elected members come from business, academia, and government, providing leadership and expertise for projects focusing on relationships between engineering, technology, and quality of life.
