"Use of New Ethylene Oxide Exposure Data to Inform Risk Management Practices"

WEDNESDAY, 5/24, 10:30-11:00 AM

M2: Research Roundup Risk Assessment Session

Speaker: Pamela Dopart, Ph.D., CIH

The general population is exposed to ethylene oxide (EtO) — the primary chemical used to sterilize medical equipment and supplies — through multiple pathways, which complicates any EtO exposure assessment. This presentation will discuss recently available EtO monitoring data collected on multiple exposure pathways, allowing for the assessment of total and source-specific EtO exposure and supporting risk management practices development.

"Based on a 2016 reevaluation of EtO's carcinogenic potential, the Environmental Protection Agency is taking steps to reduce EtO exposures with two proposals that would reduce annual EtO emissions at commercial sterilization facilities by 80% from current levels, restrict how much EtO these facilities can use, and create new safeguards for workers."
