3D Printers in Exponent's Biomedical Labs

July 7, 2016

Exponent's Biomedical Engineering laboratory has installed its first two 3D printers. The Ultimaker 2+ and MakerBot Replicator are functional and available for making prototype test samples and fixtures to support testing services.

The Ultimaker 2+ has a working space of 223 by 223 by 205 mm, while the MakerBot Replicator has a working space of 252 by 199 by 150 mm. Both printers are capable of resolutions down to 100 microns. They are intended to be used with ABS and PLA polymeric materials.

The systems have successfully passed installation and operational qualification. New printing projects that support laboratory procedures will be qualified on an as needed basis. The laboratory is using these printers  for rapid production of prototype laboratory test fixtures. We have also generated prototype test coupons and samples for fixture validation activities for several existing methods. The printers have a wide spectrum of capabilities beyond the validated uses mentioned above and we are excited to continue to extend their utility.

While we work to incorporate these systems into our typical laboratory service offerings, please do not hesitate to contact us if you have a more specific need in mind. More information on the capabilities of Exponent's Biomedical Engineering Laboratories can be found here.
