Exponent welcomes Mario Guerra to our Houston office, expanding the firm's deep expertise in metallurgy, corrosion, welding, and failure analysis
Exponent welcomes Mario R. Guerra, P.E., as a senior managing engineer in our Metallurgical & Corrosion Engineering practice in Houston. Mr. Guerra brings more than 25 years of experience helping clients solve complex engineering challenges involving materials performance, corrosion, welding, and structural integrity across the energy, aerospace, manufacturing, and industrial sectors.
Leadership in materials integrity and failure analysis
Throughout his career, Mr. Guerra has led multidisciplinary investigations involving equipment failures, corrosion, and materials qualification. His expertise includes failure analysis, metallurgical testing, fracture mechanics, materials selection, and welding engineering for critical infrastructure and other high-consequence applications. His consulting experience spans conventional and unconventional oil and gas, offshore and subsea systems, carbon capture and storage, geothermal energy, and aerospace.
Before joining Exponent, Mr. Guerra served as a director of materials, integrity, and metallurgical testing laboratories. Earlier in his career, he held engineering and technical leadership roles in the oil and gas and aerospace industries, where he supported materials engineering, corrosion management, welding, and equipment reliability programs.
Mr. Guerra has extensive experience evaluating oil country tubular goods (OCTG), such as production tubing and casing, pipelines, drilling equipment, wellhead equipment, subsea systems, and other industrial components used in demanding operating environments. He has supported clients through materials selection, engineering assessments, root-cause investigations, fitness-for-service evaluations, and expert witness engagements involving manufacturing defects, corrosion damage, and structural failures. His work has also included research and development of corrosion-resistant alloys and high-strength low-alloy steels for extreme sour service applications, high-pressure/high-temperature applications, and emerging energy technologies.

Mr. Guerra holds B.S. and M.S. degrees in metallurgical and materials engineering from the University of Texas at El Paso and an M.S. in mechanical engineering from Missouri University of Science and Technology. He is a registered professional engineer and has authored numerous technical publications on metallurgy, corrosion, welding, and materials engineering. He is an active presenter at industry conferences, where he shares expertise on casing failures, materials selection, carbon capture systems, and structural integrity.
