Dr. Doré brings extensive expertise to Exponent's Metallurgical & Corrosion Engineering practice in London
We are excited to welcome materials engineering expert Matthew Doré, Ph.D., CEng, FWeldI, AMICE, to our London office as a senior managing engineer in the Metallurgical & Corrosion Engineering practice. Dr. Doré has extensive experience researching and evaluating material fatigue in structures and components and examining crucial structural welds in bridges and energy pipelines.
Professional fatigue and fracture experience
Dr. Doré brings over 25 years of experience working as a project engineer, team manager, section manager, and technology fellow for a global engineering consultancy to Exponent. During his time there, Dr. Doré managed multiple technical projects, undertaking stress analysis for various structures, components, and critical infrastructure. He helped develop a novel sensor to estimate the consumed design life of critical welds and trained others on its proper deployment and use.
Dr. Doré has led major, high-stakes engineering initiatives, including delivering a critical UK infrastructure project ahead of the London Olympics and managing a large multi-company, multi-country testing program. He also holds influential leadership roles in industry standards and professional bodies, chairing key fatigue-related standards and serving as the UK delegate to the International Institute of Welding on fatigue. He has managed sizeable technical teams and, as a structural integrity technology fellow, provided technical authority and strategic guidance across proposals, projects and research initiatives. Dr. Doré additionally has experience as an expert witness related to fatigue and fracture in welded structures.
"I am excited to bring my expertise in fatigue, structural integrity, and standards development to my work at Exponent, turning complex structural requirements into clear guidance and standards‑aligned solutions for today's engineering challenges"
— Matthew Doré, Ph.D., CEng, FWeldI, AMICE, Senior Managing Engineer, Metallurgical and Corrosion Engineering
Dr. Doré's academic and research leadership underscores his deep technical foundation in fatigue and structural integrity, from his doctoral work to establishing an innovation center on structural integrity, and more than 30 peer-reviewed publications. In 2015, he completed a Ph.D. with the Department of Innovation & Engineering at The Open University titled "An Investigation of Fatigue Crack Growth Acceleration." Themes included the effect of periodic underloads on fatigue crack growth rate and mechanisms influencing crack growth acceleration and endurance testing of welded joints for a structural steel and aluminium alloy.
In 2021, Dr. Doré developed the Advanced Structural Integrity Innovation Centre in partnership with Coventry University. The Centre aims were to advance cutting-edge technologies and develop novel methods for safety-critical applications that can improve reliability and accuracy of integrity assessments. During that time, Dr. Doré was also a professor at Coventry University where he supervised Ph.D. students and helped secure funding for research projects in the field of structural integrity.
