On October 16, 2019, Dr. Richard W. Klopp, Ph.D., P.E., principal engineer at Exponent, was elected as a Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). A Fellow is one who has attained a membership grade of distinction at the time of advancement, is a corporate member of the Society, has been responsible for significant engineering achievements, and has 10 years of active practice and 10 years of corporate membership in ASME.
Richard W. Klopp, Ph.D., P.E., F.A.S.M.E., principal engineer, specializes in mechanical engineering and the mechanics of materials. He has expertise in laboratory-based testing, mechanical design, failure analysis and prevention, and manufacturing. His mechanical engineering background includes extensive experience in machining; machinery; analysis of fasteners, gears, and bearings; power generation; mechanical power transmission; optical systems; metrology; hydraulic systems; and fluid handling components. His mechanics of materials background includes extensive experience in fracture mechanics, high strain rate deformation and failure, impact and shock wave loading, mechanical testing and optical measurement methods.

"I am pleased to announce my election as a Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. I am deeply grateful my wife, family, Exponent colleagues, former SRI colleagues, professors, fellow classmates, and particularly my father, without whom this would not have happened. My father was a mechanical engineer all his life and provided me with a unique upbringing such that mechanical engineering has been my life, too. Like him, I try to learn something new every day, and I try to contribute innovation and fresh insight to every engineering project I tackle. I would like to thank the ASME Santa Clara Valley Section and its leaders for sponsoring me and promoting mechanical engineering in Silicon Valley. I also acknowledge the support and encouragement of ASME B5 Technical Committee 52- Machine Tool Performance. I hope to inspire and mentor those around me with my love of this profession."
