Infrared Radiative Properties and Thermal Modeling of Ceramic-embedded Textile Fabrics

Biomedical Optics Express

February 27, 2017

The interdisciplinary team of Exponent authors including Dr. John Fessler, Dr. Matthew Pooley, Dr. Jim Brennan, Dr. David Anderson and others recently co-authored the article, "Infrared Radiative Properties and Thermal Modeling of Ceramic-embedded Textile Fabrics," in Biomedical Optics Express.

In this work, the authors conducted spectroscopic measurements on engineered polyester fabrics containing varying amounts of ceramic microparticles within their fiber cores and found a spectrally-dependent shift in infrared reflectance, transmittance and absorbance. They subsequently developed a heat transfer model to quantify the resulting change in magnitude and wavelength of infrared energy received by the wearer of a garment constructed from these fabrics.
