The Challenge

Exponent's client is developing chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cell therapy, a promising treatment for multiple myeloma and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. However, a potentially life-threatening immune system side-effect — cytokine release syndrome (CRS) — requires monitoring those receiving CAR T-cell therapy in the hospital, which increases healthcare system costs and negatively impacts patients' quality of life.


Based on the depth of experience in Exponent's Health Sciences, Biomedical Engineering & Sciences, and Biomechanics practices, a client asked us to identify digital health technologies for effective at-home monitoring of CRS and other potential side effects of CAR T-cell therapy.


The client incorporated Exponent's insights for monitoring CAR T-cell therapy recipients using digital health technologies to streamline the treatment process and reduce hospitalizations, improving affordability, equitable access, and outcomes.
