Dr. Freidenberg specializes in the evaluation of buildings and other structures to a variety of structural loading conditions, especially extreme loads such as earthquake, blast, and impact. He has investigated the quality of the design and construction of structures whose performance did not meet expectations, including investigation of the nature and scope of structural damage to concrete, masonry, wood, and steel structures resulting from blast, earthquake, wind or construction loads.

Dr. Freidenberg’s investigations typically focus on the cause and extent of damage, and scoping the most appropriate repair to return the structure to its prior condition while remedying design or construction defects. Dr. Freidenberg’s past investigations range from residential foundation cracks from tree roots to the structural failures of high-rise curtain walls. Dr. Freidenberg employs state-of-the-art engineering analysis and investigative techniques, including some that he has developed and published regarding failure analysis of pretensioned concrete and cold-formed steel.

Prior to joining Exponent, Dr. Freidenberg was an Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil and Mechanical Engineering at the U.S. Military Academy in West Point, NY. At West Point, he taught a variety of mechanics courses and also served as Associate Director for the Center for Innovation and Engineering where he developed partnerships with other academic, industry, or government researchers. Dr. Freidenberg also led numerous research projects related to blast-resistant design and advanced computer modeling of structural damage progression under extreme loadings using Department of Defense high-performance supercomputers.
