Dr. Sean Dee is recognized as an industry-leading expert in chemical engineering, incident investigation, and loss prevention. He helps clients understand the complexities that lie at the intersection of chemistry and engineering. Leveraging his chemical engineering expertise, Dr. Dee investigates process upsets and accidents, determines underlying root causes, and develops strategies to mitigate associated hazards and risk. He serves clients in many industries including oil and gas, energy and power generation, food and agricultural processing, industrial chemicals, and consumer products. His investigations and expert opinions have been leveraged by his clients to improve their processes and products, navigate regulatory proceedings, evaluate insurance claims, and resolve legal disputes.

A selection of Dr. Dee's key areas of expertise is summarized in the bulleted list below. Additional details with project examples are provided in the Select Project Experience Section.

  • Chemical Process Safety and Incident Investigation. Conducting root cause investigation of failures involving chemical processes and industrial mechanical equipment. Consulting with clients on regulatory requirements regarding OSHA's Process Safety Management Standards. Providing risk assessment services related to industrial chemical processes. Elected Director of the Process Safety Division of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers.
  • Fire and Explosion Investigation. Providing fire origin and cause investigations of residential, commercial, and industrial facilities as a certified fire and explosion investigator (CFEI). Leading large, complex, multi-disciplinary investigations of loss sites. Specialized areas of fire expertise with aerosol products and oxygen systems from experience as a voting member of technical committees including NFPA 30B (Code for Manufacturer and Storage of Aerosol Products), NFPA 53 (Recommended Practice on Materials, Equipment and Systems Used in Oxygen-Enriched Atmospheres), and ASTM G04 (Compatibility and Sensitivity of Materials in Oxygen-Enriched Atmospheres which oversees various ASTM standards including G86, G63, G88, G94, G128, and G145).
  • Power Generation, Alternative Energy and Green Manufacturing. Evaluating technologies for financial transaction due-diligence, reported poor commercial performance, or disputes arising from critical failures. Experience includes utility boilers, concentrating solar power, carbon capture, biogas and renewable natural gas (RNG), gasification, sustainable aviation fuels, bioplastics, biofuels, biochar, biomass pelleting, and Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS).
  • Combustible Dust Explosions and Dust Hazard Analysis. Performing origin and cause investigations of combustible dust explosions and fires involving equipment ranging from storage, bulk transport, dust collection, size reduction (milling, grinding), drying, congealing, and sieving. Conducting dust hazard analysis (DHA) for various industries utilizing combustible particulate solids including agricultural, food, plastics, wood, and biomass industries.

Prior to joining Exponent, Dr. Dee earned his doctorate in Chemical Engineering at the University of California, Berkeley. His graduate thesis focused on alternative energy and the production of biofuels from biomass-based energy crops. He also holds undergraduate degrees in Chemical Engineering and Sociology from Case Western Reserve University. Dr. Dee also worked in the polymer and specialty chemical manufacturing industries while completing his studies.
